Marsvnnia - Slavonski Brod in Roman time

Marsvnnia - Slavonski Brod in Roman time

When Romans invaded the Pannonian plane, Marsonia became the most important crossroad between the antique towns of Siscia and Sirmium. According to Peutinger's table it was situated on the left bank of the Sava, close to the crossing over the river. The distances indicated on the table show that Marsonia was located at the mouth of the Mrsunja (Mrsunja, that is, black water) and it obviously was named after it.

The first settlements in Brod area

The first settlements in Brod area

The first settlements on this territory have heen known since Neolithic. The Starčevo culture on mount Igrač beyond village Tomica indicates that on this site people lived in sod-houses and that they practiced hunting and hoe-farming. In the times of the Sopot culture settlements near villages Donja Bebrina and Klokočevik were known.

Slavonski Brod - about History

Slavonski Brod - about History

Brod is today a medium-sized town (in 1991 it had 55.683 inhabitants) situated by the Sava river in the region called Slavonia in the Republic of Croatia. During the two thousand years of its existence Brod has changed its name three times. In antique times it was called Marsonia, in the Middle Ages its name was Stari Grad (Old Town), from the thirteenth century it was mentioned as neighbouring village Brod. The Berislavić family built the new Brod and since that time this town has not changed its position nor the name.

Čovjek i splav

Čovjek i splav
